The strange story of the 1904 Olympic Games Marathon (#50)

Today, I have a solo episode re-capping one of the strangest stories from a marathon ever. The 1904 Olympic mens marathon, run in St. Louis Missouri, was one of the most miserable on record. I don't think you could have written a story with a race with more controversy, comedy, or health issues. From cloud dusts, to cheating, to naps, this race has everything that you could ever imagine.

Episode Highlights:

  • We discuss the backdrop to this race, and why only half the race entrants finished

  • We discuss the controversy of the original race winner- Frederick Lorz, and why he was disqualified

  • We discuss the new winner tactics to get himself to the finish line, including taking rat poison and loosing 8 pounds from start to finish

  • And many more race stories
