Chasing Your Best with Max Stoneking (#87)

Welcome to the first interview of 2024 for the Runners Resource Podcast. I am happy to share a conversation with Max Stoneking.

Max is a Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI, USA. He has a long history in the sport of swimming and he swam collegiately at the Division III level. After his swim career, he began to train and compete in triathlons and has had numerous podium finishes in the age group and Elite division ranks. He currently has his own coaching service, Elite Edge, for runners and triathletes. He also writes a weekly newsletter on Substack called Study and Sport.

Episode Highlights:

  • We discuss tapering for an athletes race. Max shares why athletes need to taper, and the outcomes that come from this important time. Max makes an excellent point, that a taper can not save you from overcoming fatigue

  • We discuss the idea of athletes who are overdeliverying. Max discusses ways that an athlete can push themselves and adapt to training, but at the same time leave something in the tank.

  • Finally we discuss the idea of the world's best vs your best. Should you do what the elites do? If they have the best training methods, should we be following their lead? Max guides us to understand WHAT the best are doing and most importantly what you should do
